The Versatility Of Tunic Style Dresses

By Etta Bowen

Tunics have been worn for centuries and were particularly popular in the time of the Roman Empire. The ones worn in those times were simple in design and colors and styles reflected the status of the wearer. These garments have changed over the years but the basic shape is as popular as ever. Today many women consider tunic style dresses to be a staple in their wardrobes. Depending upon how they are accessorized, they can be transformed to suit just about any type of occasion, whether casual or more dressy.

Tunics come in many different types and selection should be made to suit body shape. Someone with an hourglass figure can wear one which fits more tightly whereas someone who is apple shaped may need a looser one to conceal a tummy. An A-style item will help to disguise larger hips and thighs whilst a tightly clinging one cinched with a belt may help to give the impression of curves on a straight figure.

These garments also come in a wide variety of fabrics. They are commonly made from lightweight fabrics like cotton, linen or silk. Cotton is cool and comfortable, suited to a day out shopping or a lunch with friends. Silk is an elegant choice for evening wear. Jersey knits are available too and these look best on those with straight figures.

Length also has an effect on the success of the garment. One that ends at the thighs can be quite unflattering, particularly on a tall person. They usually look better in one which sits just above the knee. A short person can look more dumpy in one that is too long.

These garments can be worn by women of all shapes and sizes. However, they have to consider which style best suits their body shape. Women who have a larger stomach often choose a looser cut to conceal it whereas an A-line shape is often best for those with larger hips and thighs. Those with hourglass figures are free to choose more fitted garments that emphasize rather than hide their figures.

One of the most important things needed to make a tunic as versatile as possible, is the proper accessories. Accessories offer a way to immediately change the look of such a garment. Adding an eye-catching necklace or pendant can transform it from casual to formal wear. A belt can be added to accentuate the waist. Flats or sandals can be changed to high heels for office or evening wear. Handbags and purses also contribute to pulling a particular look together.

Layering has become extremely popular and people are layering all sorts of garments together. These dresses can also be very effectively used this way by teaming them up with skinny jeans or leggings. They are less successfully worn over skirts and wearing them with baggy pants usually makes them very unflattering.

Tunics work for almost any occasion, whether informal or formal. They also look good on most women, if the right style is chosen to compliment the body shape. Different types of tunics can be viewed to decide which cuts, styles, and patterns work best with a particular body type. When shopping online, choice is narrowed down by filtering according to size, color, brand, occasion, or price range to find what is most suitable.
