The Role Of Remotely Operated Vehicles

By Tammie Caldwell

As a result of the modern technological advancements, vehicles that can be operated under water without the need of an operator being on board exist. Their control is achieved in a number of ways. They are either attached to numerous cables connected to the vessels hosting the operator or a command is sent to them by use of signals. ROV is the abbreviation for remotely operated vehicles which have embraced this technology and play many important roles.

The science world is among the users of this type of vehicles. In line of their duties, they are likely to have concern about the happening of regions under water. When carrying out their experiments in such places, they make use of this equipment as well as when collecting samples for further study in the mainland. The scientists are also in a position to take photos of the same to support their arguments.

Exploration is not limited to the dry land only but is being carried out in deep waters. Such regions may pose a challenge for human explorers to personally undertake the exploration. This equipment is perfectly used to carry out these tasks. Through their use, minerals have been discovered and samples collected for further testing.

ROVs are fitted with cameras and video recorders. This means that they get to take images as well as videos while in use. In case of accidents happening at the waters and the vessels sinking, they are used in identifying the location and any possible survivors. Also through them, ancient wrecks such as the Titanic were discovered.

Valued items may need to be retrieved from such wrecks at one point. Achieving this by use of divers is risky and may not be easily achieved. This equipment is availed in a manner that they can assume the human roles. They are therefore used in retrieving of equipment such as the black boxes and their ability to open compartments may save lives in case victims are trapped in an enclosure.

The military has embraced this technology in a number of ways. In times of attack, they come in handy as they are in a position of effectively determining an incoming attack vessel. They also find use in exploring foreign waters when planning an attack. Another use is in patrolling the water bodies a nation owns as a matter of enhancing national security.

Documenting and filming also takes place in water bodies. Shooting a scene in deep waters is not easily achieved by divers and calls in for special equipment. Such explains why the film industry is a common client for these vehicles. Documentaries have also been made covering water bodies and explaining more of the aquatic life by use of the equipment.

Oil spills are a health hazard to marine life and measures have been put in place to combat them in case they occur. These vehicles are used to investigate on the damage and determine how serious the problem is. The Oil and gas industry also use them in exploration of areas rich in oil and gas deposits as well as monitoring their drilling progress.
