Getting out to do some shopping is a fun way to spend time. Not only does it get people out of the house, it also offers the opportunity to purchase some beautiful items. In addition, the shopper has a chance to acquire a really unique piece that they will treasure for ever.

The indigenous peoples of the North American continent have populated most parts of the country for thousands of years. It was not until about one hundred years ago that they were forced onto reservations after loosing a long and bloody war with the United States government. Many tribes fell onto hard times and experienced social and economic problems. However, things are now looking a lot brighter and many native American stores are now thriving all across the country.

Each tribe had its own unique and distinctive culture. These were typically very nature based as the native peoples were very much in touch with the earth and the environment. Their art and crafts were also very reflective of their culture and beliefs. There were many complex creation stories and myths that had been told for generations. These stories inspired fantastic artwork and jewelry.

Many people are only just beginning to realize how complex the native cultures were. They were typically based on a nomadic lifestyle, although some tribes were farmers who had extensive villages and towns. The lifestyle of the tribe was displayed in its art. For example, the war like plains people used feathers to show their ability in battle. They were also very dependent on their horses. In consequence, horses are often represented in their work.

Probably the best know style of native artwork is that of the desert southwest. There is a long tradition of working with silver, to make both jewelry and ornamental wear. The prankster of the culture is a small figure called Kokopelli. He is often featured in local artwork and jewelry. This mythical being has really become quite famous and having a piece of necklace or bracelet with his image is really quite a talking point.

In other areas of the United States pottery has been a main feature of native culture. Pots are fired with naturally based colors and glazes for a really beautiful finish. Each one is hand made so it really makes a perfect one of a kind gift. Custom pieces can also be ordered that will feature exactly what the customer needs.

The plains Indian culture was focused on the horse. Many beautiful pieces of art have been created that use horses as inspiration. In combination with the outstanding natural beauty of the central plains this style has developed into something really unique. There are now a growing number of private collectors who generate a thriving market for this art.

Supporting a native American store is the perfect way to help a group of people who are trying to compete economically. Many of the crafts people have no formal training and are struggling for recognition. Buying from them is the perfect way to show support and help them grow professionally and economically.
