Useful And Essential Facts About Florida Keys Aerial Photography

By Timothy Butler

Aerial photography is a very important field within the field of photography. Another name that is used to refer to this field is airborne imagery. Airborne imagery refers to the process of taking photographs from a flying object such as a drone or aircraft. Some of the platforms that are currently used commonly to take these photos include rockets, kites, helicopters, UAVs, balloons, parachutes, and pigeons just to mention a few. Here are facts regarding Florida Keys aerial photography.

The photos may be taken by a person aboard the various airborne platforms. However, if the platform cannot be boarded by a human being, then the cameras used are triggered automatically or remotely. Airborne imagery and air to air photography are two different ideas because of the manner in which photos in the two concepts are taken. In air-to-air imagery, photos of airborne platforms such as aircrafts, rockets, balloons among others are taken by another airborne platform.

There are some factors that determine how pictures taken from the atmospshere can be categorized. If the pictures are captured from an angle, then they are called oblique pictures. If the angle relative to the ground is low, then the term low oblique photos is used to describe the photos taken. On the contrary, if the angle is high, then the photos are referred to as high or steep oblique photos.

Another group of photographs is known as vertical photographs. These are pictures which are captured straight down. Pictures of this kind are generally taken to be utilized for photo interpretation and photogrammetry. Photos which are applied in photogrammetry are typically taken with the use of special cameras of large-format. Cameras of this kind have documented and specially calibrated geometric settings.

Vertical photographs find use in the creation of orthophotos. Another name used to refer to orthophotos is orthophotomaps. These are photographs that have been geometrically corrected so that they can be used as maps. A better way of looking at orthophotos is a simulation of photos captured from an infinite distance, looking straight down. Perspective is usually removed in these photos while differences in terrain are corrected.

The field of aerial photography is attached to a long history that started in France. Gdpard-Felix Tournachon was the first individual to experiment with taking shots from the air. Tournchon was a balloonist and a photographer. Therefore, the individual chose to capture shots of the earth from the air. Tournachon used cameras which were installed on a balloon and flown above Paris.

The idea of taking aerial photographs would later become very popular with the onset of the First World War. Both the Germans and Britons used their planes to conduct surveillance of enemy troops. The pictures that were taken at that time were in black and white colors only. This made them to be of low quality. Also, since the cameras used were not powerful enough, the altitude at which the photos could be taken was limited.

Today, airborne imagery is a fully developed field. It finds use in very many industries, including the military, research, aeronautical, film making, music, and recreation among others. Equipment used today is better and safer as well.
